At the risk of going over old ground, I am interested to hear from other mozzie sailors what their preferred mainsheet system consists of. I am aware of the 4 types on the Victorian web site, and a few more, but would like to know why people prefer their setup.

As you know... but for the benefit of the post. I went from a centre sheet 6:1 system (Ronstan RF7) to a rear traveler 6:1 system (Harken 2613+8mm cleat) to 1. reduce weight (lost 835g) and 2. clear the deck for Mk2 and 3. The centre sheet system limits traveler use, (tightens leech, etc). Make things as simple as possible and you will have less liklehood of Murphy sticking his nose in when you least need it. <img src=

I also use a 6:1 ratio block system off the traveller with a cleat running off the bottom tripple block ratchet. This cleans up the trampoline for clutter free space and no extra fittings/weight.
Did you check out the Sth African Mozzies on the Rudder topic with the boom mounting ? It looks like they spread the boom loading and use a smaller diameter (lighter) boom. <img src=

Thanks for that. I did notice the South African setup, it's a bit difficult to see the sheeting arrangement from the Dotan photo, perhaps one of their members might describe it for us. I plan on going to a smaller boom, but want to do my homework first. Does anyone use two ratchet blocks in their system?

I am trying the Victorian Mozzie Site No 1 System,
All on the rear beam, with cleat and rachet block fixed in the centre.
I went away from the triple block on the rear beam as I had problems with the cleat angle. I either couldn't get it cleated while on the wire or I couldn't get it uncleated while on the wire.
I broke my hand a year or so a go and have lost a bit of strength in it and need a sure cleating system. The new system seems to be working better for me.
We have tried using a 50mm round tube with a 1.5 mm wall thicknes but this has proved a bit fragile, especially with a single triple block hanging from a single point on the boom.
We have a few mossy sailors that run three single blocks off the boom this does spread the load but they are using a dinghy mast section. I will see if I can get some pictures.

Has anyone tried spreading the load of the triple block across say 300mm of the boom as opposed to a single point load? This wouldn't be hard to do!!
I have 7:1, with the becket at the top and combined 3 plus 1 at the bottom and a triple with ratchet at the top. It is a modification of a harken 8:1 system, as I found that the ratchet on the bottom of the system won't hold much weight as it only wraps around the load ratchet about 100 degrees. I have another ratchet on the upper block as well now and it worked really well during a recent blow in bendigo.
To attach to the boom, I have a dyneema (?) loop inside plastic fuel hose which goes around the boom similar to the A class. I don't trust hangers on a point load, and if you put a flat side shackle in the loop you can attach it to your out haul slot to get the perfect position. I am really happy with this set up now after a bit of mucking around.

I use a 6:1 system, i have a ronstan 40mm orbit triple block (Rf45301)at the top mounted on a boom hanger ronstan (RF483) about 200mm aft from the rear beam and on an angle and a harken triple block with becket and cleat (Harken 40mm 2613) . i have raised the cleat so its harder to cleat and took off the saddle on top of the cleat (No accidental cleating.
I only cleat when i have the kite up, all other times i hold it in my bare hands on every leg i dont have a kite up!
i also use the old paper tiger / sabre mast section as a boom section which is roughly about 55mm by 45mm section and never had a problem with it!
