[#17793]

Hi all, I'm new to the board, new to CatSailor in fact. Someone you might call a newbie...
Got my eye on a Mystere 5.5 over here on the wet coast. Been reading up on the troubling situation with corporate Mystere, its factory, and service. To buy or not to buy?
Any idea what it might be worth? What's the going rate for a 1997 5.5? There aren't many out this way, so I worry also about the resale value. Everyone flies Hobies here hence I'm not in it for the racing. I'm one of those guy's that's happiest when I'm the only boat in the water...

Any insight greatly appreciated!
Cheers
Adrian

p.s. I don't have a cat right now, so I don't have a cool picture as my icon. For now it's the dog...

Hi Adrian,
Good question. I wish I had a clearcut answer. I have a Mystere 6.0. While I really like the boat (it's solid, I like the rigging and it handles well), I have to say that I don't think I would buy it again if I had it to do over again.

My biggest challenge has been tuning it and sharing info with other local Mystere owners. Unfortunately, it seems I'm the only one in my area.

If I had it to do over again, I would buy a Nacra or a Hobie (a Nacra more likely). Granted, you should do what's best for you. When I bought mine, I was lured by the fact that it had 2 sets of sails, 3 spinnakers, and a whole bunch of other stuff. If it's a good deal, I don't think you'll be dissappointed in the boat itself. But you'll be largely on your own with it with little or no support from Mystere.

Hi Adrian,

Steve (sr072896 ... my work id).

I've just gotten back from a month of offsite.

Anyway would I (again) buy a Mystere, Nope probably not.

I've been to the factory, then a week later they've moved.

PS I'm in mtl. Anyway, parts are supposed to be available

from Yves School , but then again you can't get

anyone on the phone (or on the web) from the offical site.

So my advice would be to hold until Mystere comes back

(if it ever does).

I think I will heed the advice offered so far - even though summer's here and I am desperate to get sailing again.. Unless of course he's more desperate to sell than I am to sail!

It is almost as though Mystere is a publicly traded company undergoing some mysterious restructuring; the details of which are kept from the common investor until the bitter end!
There isn't even access to the old website where I could at least browse the 'for sale' category. Most companies leave their previous website running until their new one is fully functional and bug free - and then launch it overnight.
Hmmmphhh...

Yea, tough to decide. As far as Mystere goes, would I buy another one? No, I'm keeping mine. I can't think of a better boat for what I do. The first 5.5 is on our beach and sailing just about every weekend. Another friend has one and loves it, Dave Parker is trying to close a deal on one. I know 3 other people that are looking for a 5.5 or 6.0 so if you don't want it let me know about it so I can tell those people.

As far as price goes it depends on whats there, condition of the sails, etc. One friend paid about $1500 but it needed lines, rigging, tramp. Another paid about $4000 and it had everything including the 10' wide kit. When you buy a boat like this make sure you insure it for a set value. That way if something happens like a hull failure and your unable to replace it you don't wind up with nothing.

Hey Guy's

Know what, I have to (completely) agree with Bob (DSYC).

When I visted the (new) factory in Feb, I'd seen a
ton's of new work going on. Then later when I had
some work done on my boat, they'd basically pulled
up root's and moved to another local.

Hopefully we'll hear from someone at Mystere, on where
and importantly when they'll be back at the switch.

In the interim, I'm told that you can get part's from
Yves's sailing school 450-472-8042.

Soooo, we'll see. Gotta tell you that I love the boat,
and when I had my work done, I could not have had any
better one on one service (they drove out 45 min one way
and spent 5 hours with me making sure everything was ok).

But still and then again, I ask myself why keep your customer base guessing where you'll be next. Nope, if it was my company, I'd apply a more customer friendly strategy.

Catch you all Later

Steve

WCC. If you find boat in good shape there is no reason in the world not to buy. The boats are worth every dollar compared to similar cats of size and age. I in particular do not use the factory for parts. And have my standing rigging made by local FL based companies. Thats all I have had to do so far . My issue is the taunting by a company that has not fulfilled a vision to have a cat lineup as advertised or projected, will I live ,yes. will I sail ,yes . It is just a little disapointing. Bob G. mystere owners on this forum I think would get a kick out an actively planned sales pitch.Racing , Camping etc. <img src=

I just called the sailing school at 450-472-8042 and spoke with Kim, Yves daughter (fair English, poor phone connection). She told me that they will still be selling parts through the school. She gave me an email address which I will share when I'm sure it works.

I have no expectation of great service but it's a ray of hope for availability of parts.

Dave I think you have missed your calling. You should try Private Investigator. <img src=

I'm hoping I don't need them for anything.

I'll feel like a successful detective if I can find and buy the lost M5.5 I've been hunting for for so long. I'm close, maybe this weekend. <img src=

No, I've not heard of your 5.5 being over here on the west coast. I wish it was so our fleet would grow.

However, today I FINALLY got to see the 5.5 I've been chasing for over two years! <img src=

Parked in a back yard unused for those 2 years it looked pretty good but the sails are thin and tramp pretty burnt. Now, to get this guy to sell it cheap...

What do you think is a fair price? Galvanized trailer, cat trax, no sail box, hulls sound, all hardware present, lines green with algae growth. Otherwise, I could sail it today. What should I offer?

A quote from a bank book for a 95 M5.5 complete 4800.00-5500.00 this seems high unless your selling. If it needs sails but everything else is good maybe start at a price significantly lower.A 98 N6.0 I believe was sold for 3500.00 complete with a new Dacron main.If the boats older it comes down to what it's worth to you to have it and what he needs to get out of it when it has been lying around like this particular one. Newer 2nd hand boats seem to stick much higher (I know that was obvious). Glad you said something though as I was about to go jump his moorings. We actually have two 5.5's then in Delray . Good luck....

Dave is an owner of a 5.5 Mystere.

Now you have to sell your other boat to you know who if you want to remain in good favor with the rest of us. <img src=

OK, I was going to wait until I had it in the water to talk about it but, YES, I found the missing 5.5 I've been looking for for about 2 years. It was sitting in a backyard, dying in the Florida sun. Although the boat was thoroughly burnt out, the owner got the sailing bug when I showed interest in his boat. In spite of my firm warning about the unsafe condition of the trampoline he went ahead and set up the boat and pushed off the beach with his wife and two kids, straight into a 12-15 knot wind, on the nose. He could not lower the centerboards and got about 20 feet off the beach and just slid sideways until he drifted onto a shoal. Jumping off to walk the bows across and jumping back on he ripped through the tramp. Disgusted and suffering verbal abuse from the family, he dragged the boat and family back through the shallows to his car. I was there to offer condolences and told him that I would buy the boat “as is” and he could just get in his car and drive home and I would clean up the mess. He said yes and I wrote a check for $1900 and he left. Perhaps I took advantage of his bad situation...OK, I did. Too bad, it's mine now! He called the next day and wanted to buy it back but by then I had it all apart and was planning my re-build. I politely declined his offer.

Interesting note about its condition - the centerboard throats were so FILLED with wasp nests that the boards would not begin to move. It took hours to kill the beasts and scrub out the mess. Those nests are held on with some fierce

glue

! The beams were also filled with an ant colony. MILLIONS of them! Mass death followed. Then I discovered that EVERY cam cleat had been tightened so much that they were jammed either open or closed. Not one would move. I adjusted each one and then rinsed and lubed every block, cleat, and sheave on the boat. EVERYTHING was jammed and filled with crud. However, it was all there and only one cam spring needed replacing. The lines were covered with algae and Spanish moss (the stuff that hangs from trees here in Florida). Lots of soap, bleach, and fabric softener revived them. Nearly everything is OK for temporary use. The sails are fair to good, being stored inside a garage. I borrowed an old tramp from another 5.5 user in our Mystere-rich neighborhood. It's got an excellent galvanized trailer and I rearranged it for towing backwards and solo mast stepping. It was all hard work but big fun and a labor of love. Now all need is some time to sail it!

So now I have two very cool Mysteres, a 5.5 and a 5.0XL. Which one should I keep? I plan on setting up both and swapping throughout the day until I decide. I figure the 5.5 will be the winner. Dunedin Causeway must be one of the bigger Mystere fleets outside of Canada! This boat makes it three 5.5s along with two 5.0s, three 6.0s, and a handful of 4.3s.

The spin gear is coming soon, right after new shrouds, sheets, and a new tramp. Time…all I need is lots of free time.

Yes, it's shallow.

Mysteres have kick-up boards or skegs. Perfect for island hopping and shoal running.

I own and sail a 1997-5.5 in Boca Raton. Would you please advise on two issues: 1) The rudder blades are shot. Is there an “off the shelf” replacement? 2) I would like to rig for a spinnaker. As you begin work on yours, would you supply a list of parts, specs and instructions as to how to install?

Thank you

As to the spin rig, I think that Catman and I are both going to go with an AHPC ring and some generic pole. Routing of lines, placement of blocks, and photos of tramp layout ideas are all over this forum. We have the advantage of having Robbie Daniel and Jill Nickerson, the new AHPC reps, right in town. They have a garage full of cool Tornado gear, cat parts, and boundless knowledge and ideas. Write to Jill at Funinthesun(at)juno.com for prices.

As you work out your plans be sure to post your progress. It's worth its own thread.

You might try to call the PH# that I think is in this thread. Mystere parts are supposed to still be availible.
Let us know how that goes.

As far as off the shelf goes a pair of Hobie blades might work.
