The old Gasket material question?
I don't know a FLA. source but the best stuff is the stuff layline sells. The better question is do you use the two inch and put it on in two separate pieces butting them together or overlap them or do you put on the three inch wide stuff.? And since we sail with both boards down like a T do you trim the gasket material so it shaped to the board when the board is down?
Looks like I will use the 3" strip of what I see from "layline " is white (I now have black). At the moment there is a slit down the middle and two circles cut out on each end of the 34.5" strip. Like this o------o, I never thought about cutting the shape out for the boards to pass through. Is that the general concensus.
Talking to Robbie, he uses the two inch stuff and overlaps them slightly and attaches them with epoxy. With board fully down he trims the gasket around the board. This way the gasket is not being forced to bend as much and the gaskets last longer. You probably gain about an inch more board seeing the water.
I've tried the 2 two inch strips overlapped and I had some problems with the edges catching and not closing. I'm using the three inch stuff and they are trimmed for the board shape. One side has lasted all year and the other side I had to replace once. You may know this but the thing that kills them is spinning the boat any amount on the beach. If you have to turn the boat on the beach pick up the bows then turn it.
One thing about trimming the board shape into it, If you like to raise the leeward board on a fast reach you wind up with a large hole letting water in. Anyway some ideas for you.
I made a pattern for each side out of the gasket material ( they are slightly different on my boat) so it's easy to set up a new set. I'm using contact cement to attach.
I haven't seen the black stuff. Is it mylar? Where did you get it?
The pre-grooved area for the gasket is 3" across . My boat came via Robbie Daniels through a couple of owners . Mr. Maples from the west coast got the cat from Robbie D. and when I recieved it from the 3rd owner in Lakeland the Black 3" mylar or nylon material came with it.But not on it!Apparently the guy was sailing around without the gaskets.Does the water come flying up through it at speed without the gaskets? (Meet Captain Booty and the Enimates I guess)! Anyway its great to say My boat comes from R.Daniels of Olympic fame but actually we all get to say that with our Mysteres "Hey you Know this boat was first owned by Robbie Daniels the Olympic Tornado Cat sailor". Anyway I also took a little shot at the whining over the Alter Cup boat. The M6.0 was picked in 93.You know all these boats have hulls much alike the Mysteres and the Mystere's are much alike the Tornado....
