Who has the oldest Mystere still sailing?
Did 'nt B.Curry race Mysteres in the Alter Cup.It was Bob somebody but he was definately an Meteorologist .Although not the oldest it was a segway for the 90's
If it was Yves San Soucy who started it then it was after his spell at Sail-Craft of Canada and his Tornado work and I am guessing in the early 80's.This is not verified but piece-meal info.Anytime Yves wants to get over here to correct this he is more than welcome.Actually I am surprised that Rick does not know the story.
The person who would know is Robbie Daniel, since he was the distributor/dealer in the United States. However, based upon the information in my files, it appears the Mystere brand began in the early 1990's -- or at least that is my first knowledge of it appearing in the United States. Maybe it existed in Canada and Europe long before??
And, by the way, in an earlier post in this forum I think I said something about possibly a Mystere 5.7 being boardless. After going through my file, it appears it is the Mystere 5.5 that has both a board and boardless version.
Congrates on the 200 post mark. On to the Q at hand maybe we should refrase it as the most southern and work north ..................Bob Grubb 93' Mystere6.0 Delray Beach FLA. "MeeCatchu" "And one thing I have noticed on this coast is the increasing wind speeds overall compared to europe so maybe that is going to change some of the ratings? No.196 still sailing proudly in the memory J.Maples............
Rocco Cuccia was actually the first Mystere dealer in the US in the very early 90's. In fact, the first Mystere ever sailed in the US was 5.0 (stock), sail number 24. I still have a picture of it somewhere. At any rate, the origional hulls are still sailing off Dunedin Causeway, FL.
OK, the 5.0S (with boards) was certainly less Dart-ish, but they quickly dumped the design in favor of the skeg. I'm not dumping on Mysteres, they're phenominal boats (I've owned two, including the first 5.0XL in the country), but back then the fit and finish was terrible...hence the K-Mart reference.
Original sails - picture from summer 2005. Unfortunately no close-ups although I may have an original brochure that I could scan and post if you are interested.
I have been told the boat is a scaled-down version of the Tornado and based on the Tornados at the club I used to sail at I have no reason to doubt the claim as the boats share a remarkable resemblence.
The
S
is just under 18 feet with a 7.5 foot beam. Mast is 28 feet and it carries 220 sq feet or so of sail. Came with harken blocks, Barberhauler (sp?), double trapeze, foot straps and chicken lines which I see is the subject of another post (we call them
suicide lines
).
Great boat for the time - I recall the designer and manufacturer coming to our club from Quebec for a race and humbling the fleet with a sister ship.
Like windsurfing, which is my preferred sailing sport these day, technological advances in the cat world seem to be moving faster than my pocketbook and I can keep up.
