Australia Day Regatta, Yarrawonga
Hi all,
Altered
is heading up to the Murray for some fresh water fun. Look forward to seeing some other cats with kites Friday, Sat, Sun. Watch out for the Mossies, I hear they have been a problem at Yarrawonga before. <img src=

Hi Matt,
I haven't been there since I sailed Fireballs in the 70's. My memories are that it is not a very big lake, but great facilities and good fleets, organisers expect 30 cats or so.
Heard good reports from ANZAC regatta last year, which is why I decided to put it on my list instead of Torquay, that I have attended last few years. Also met John and co. at St. Leonards and am keen to sail with Taipans with spinnakers, when possible.
Maybe I will catch you Anzac regatta.
John may have more up to date info on the venue?

Hi Matt,
a very short regatta, blown out Sat. came home late yesterday guessing today would be blown out also. <img src=
alt=
/>
Not many entries Frid. more turned up after racing finished for Sat. but couldn't sail too windy. <img src=
alt=
/>
From memory Frid. Entries 6 Mossies one with spinnaker,3 A class,2 cat rig Taipans no spinnakers,
Altered
, 3 Paper Tigers, Hobie 16.
First race, gusty 5-15 kts. shifting 45 degrees erraticly <img src=
alt=
/>.Course was 3 triangles 2 windward and returns, not ideal for spinnakers.
Altered
battled with Dennis on Taipan first beat, he was first around mark. Then
Altered
and
Faye
A class battled rest of race for lead.
Altered
made big gains on windward and return, but there where not enough of them, the A was to quick on the reaches,
Altered
rounded last leeward mark ahead but The A was lifted one tack to the finish
Altered
had to tack putting me second with Dennis on the Taipan not far behind.
Second race same course, wind 10-20kts. still shifty. The A was late at the start leaving Dennis on Taipan and Floyd's Sloop Mossie fighting for lead on first beat,
Altered
was getting all the shifts wrong and back in the pack.
Altered
quickly got back to the lead Taipan off the wind and made some enormous gains on the returns <img src=
alt=
/>. Dennis on Taipan gained on reaches on the last triangle, as
Altered
pulled the spinnaker up and down at least twice each reach <img src=
alt=
/>.
Altered
still had lead of a couple of minutes up the last beat but capsized <img src=
alt=
/>. In a big gust which was lifting. Leaving Dennis on the Taipan to take the lead and Me . <img src=
alt=
/> <img src=
alt=
/>
Isn't sailing fun? No excuses just wasn't good enough. <img src=
alt=
/>
Good social night Friday plenty of time to chat, sitting around in shorts and T shirt till 11pm. Midnight wind came up sailors got up and tied boats down etc. <img src=
alt=
/> Wind built all night, by daylight it looked un sailable, A class not tied down blew over and broke mast <img src=
alt=
/>. But club had other ideas reckoned it was only blowing 22 kts. <img src=
alt=
/> Old A class went out got back in one piece, but never pulled the sail in, skipper said he was just glad to get back. Lasers went out one broke mast and was planing back with top mast dangling in the water, one couldn't tack rescue boat had to help him, better Laser made it unscathed.
Wind continued to pick up so I packed up. <img src=
alt=
/> Long Drive ahead 6&1/2 hours up via Melb. . <img src=
alt=
/> Went back over the Mountains <img src=
alt=
/> Passed the Fires just saw smoke and burnt ground <img src=
alt=
/> only took 4&1/2 hours <img src=
alt=
/>.
Regards Gary. <img src=

Thanks Gary
Warrnambool Yacht Club held their regatta this weekend too, much the same story, when I rang a mate for an update, he and other sailing mates were at the Grand Annual Sprintcar Classic (also in Warrnambool).
You didn't happen to hear Dennis discussing having the Taipan Vic States up there? When I spoke to him last, he was 95% sure they would be there, to be held in conjunction with the Anzac Regatta.
How many hours is it from Melbourne? I'm guessing probably 3 or so, but not sure, been to NSW plenty but never that been up that way.
Regards

Gary,
What a bugger that the weather was so rotten. <img src=
alt=
/> Somers Y.C. also had races cancelled on Saturday and Sunday.
Someone at work went up to Yarrawonga for a water skiing weekend and said that they couldn't get out on Saturday due to the wind. Instead they went to some sprintcar event for the day and so did everyone else in the district. It appears that there were so many people there that cars were double parked and they ended up shutting the gates and turning people away.
Regards,
Peter
Hi guys,
2 races were held on the Sunday to finish the Regatta, with about 10 to 18 knot winds. Dennis cleaned up our division, and took overall Regatta Champion. Mosquitos had enough for their own division, and they would have beaten many in our division on handicap. Pity the Saturday was a bit windy.
