freakin' ice storm!
Arrrgggghhh. This is the worst I've seen it up here. No power for miles. Wood burning stove keeping the billiard room tosty and the RV setup for hot showers (but pesky generater refuses to run). My 40+ year old magnolia tree in my front yard is in pieces as is the very large sweet gum ball tree that the RV is usually parked under. Plum tree coming apart too. Sounded like bombs this morning! The catamaran is sitting bare in the one spot on the yard where it's not likely to be affected by tree pieces parts. I'll post some pictures when I head out to the RV and have enough power to post (if Sprint doesn't lose power to their towers next) or the power comes back - could be a while! Gotta move the refrigerator contents outside and/or into the RV now.

Jake.
Break out that "sunshower" bag you have, heat some water on the stove, pour it in (add cold water to taste), hang that baby in the shower, and viola' - Hot shower!
Sux about the ice storm. Don't have many of those in Naples. Our cold front dropped the temperatures into FRIGID 75 degrees today, and maybe 50 tonight. I don't know what I will do with myself.
I don't even know if I have any long pants...

Good luck. Ice storms are the worst. Had one up here in NH about 5 years ago that we still have damage to the trees from. The BOOMS lasted for 2 weeks with the weight of the ice breaking off the limbs. Hope it all works out and the worst of it is a fluky generator.....
We'll get it tomorrow as snow.
Greg
Jake,
I am sorry I think I could have caused the ice storm. When we were at the Alter Cup Regatta that Nigel was hosting and sitting under Nigel's new pool screen enclosure I asked him what would happen if we had an ice storm. Nigel said that they rarely have ice storms. Hopefully the storm did not get Nigel too. Hope you don't have too much damage.
Mary,
Actually it looks very similar to that photo (just not near the water!). If I can find my camera cable, I'll upload a shot or two...although there's a lot of ice and broken trees, it's not so bad. The house and the boat are completely intact and although Bonnie is a bit under the weather - she's keeping warm here too. I was actually beginning to enjoy sitting here by candle light with the wood stove crackling...the silence is unusal and peaceful. I was only trying to figure out what to occupy myself with since laptop power is limited and I've already played every song I know on the Piano (
) Then my neighbor cranked up a kagillion watt generator and the floor is almost shaking. So much for that. On the upside, unlike living through the aftermath of a hurricane, the beer stays cold by leaving it on the back porch.
I think Nigel was just barely south enough to avoid most of the ice...I hope so anyway. but YIKES...I can't imagine what that would do to a screened in pool. I suppose that's why you don't see those much further north huh!?
Jake, They say it'll be here tomorrow morning. I'd rather have snow! Fortunately I don't have to go out in the morning. The storm Greg mentioned was really devastating in northern New England. That was the one where the towers for high power lines bent from the weight of the ice. Hate to hear the trees breaking! Sorry for tha damage to your trees. Keep Bonnie warm. Brian
Cary,
I'm still around in Raleigh, although I'll be busy going to my friend's memorial service so I doubt I'll be in the mood for beers.
Up here in Raleigh we only had rain. It didn't stop the idiots from playing bumper cars on I40 though. PEOPLE TURN YOUR HEADLIGHTS ON SO I CAN SEE YOU.
skiing? Love to - but it would be two months before I could use my knees again.
We're still without power...no real idea when it might be back but there is nobody within miles of us with power. On the upside, there is a school within a couple of miles and schools are on the priority list for restoring power. I'm at work and amazingly there's power here.
It could be a lot worse. These pictures were from yesterday afternoon. The ice built a little more and I lost more of the Magnolia tree after these were taken. The boat picture is from this morning....that just looks cold doesn't it?

Lost Heir to the throne of Quixotal!
Yeah...I thought that was kinda ironic. I have a lot of friends here at work that have trees in their houses - and I'm not talking 2x4's. This was a pretty bad one. Looking at the picture of my boat, I can tell that she's yearning for Key Largo in three weeks.
Hey Jake ,-I think it's David's fault too
Without the trials and tribulations one would never appreciate the the idealic warm smooth sunny sailing days .
I used to sail here on the great lakes usually out of Metro Bch on Lake St Clair well into November and that was in the days before drysuits. On more than one occation we were flipping ice off the stays while sailing.
I'm sure some of the more Northern lattitude sailors have stories of more severe cold weather sailing. I recall meeting the Canadian sailor {Jeff} that sailed a H-18 through the Northwest passage among polar bears and ice flows .
So marvel at mother nature, embrace the ice and be thankfull it is only a very temporary situation in

ONe day last winter, say about February, a friend and I had to quit sailing for the day when the spinnaker sheets froze to the hulls and we couldn't break them free. Every time we would raise the spin, so much ice had accumulated that it "snowed" on us. I'm glad I don't live farther north!
Still no power yet. Did a tour around the neighborhood this morning and in three blocks counted 3 snapped power poles. The rest of the hood behind us is the same if not worse. While it's no hurricane and most houses are intact, it's a little surprising how extensive the damage is. My neighbor was telling me that 1/2" of ice on a 2 foot long limb adds 10lbs of weight.
I feel for you'll. I am so glad all I have to worry about is hurricanes
I have boat in storage and cleaned up for next season. Counting the months till sailing season.
March or April around here.

I saw most of NC's part of the ice storm on my way from the Outer Banks to Asheville Thursday. We got Greenville's local news channels at the place I stayed in Asheville, what a mess. It reminded me of Raleigh in the winter of 2002. Luckily it didn't have much of an impact on the ski trip, except for a scary drive through the mountains.
There was still debris on the shoulders of I-40 on the way back yesterday. Jake, I hope your clean up isn't too bad.
Thanks to the hard work of tree and power folks from as far away as Maryland, the power's back on!
It's going to a pretty cold night and although we were relatively comfy living out of the RV, it's still nice to be able to wash clothes and so forth. I put up some more pictures of the neighborhood. Some of those guys claim that they've been home for less than two weeks since Katrina.
