[#12053]

Having problems with my jib halyard on my hobie 16.It seems fine untill I hook up the jib and raise it then it has a twist at the top. When I rigged the mast I put the shrouds and forstay shackle on the middle hole of the mast tang and put the trap lines on the lower hole. Can this cause a problem? Also my main halyard the wire part has developed some kinks that has made it difficult to keep it against the mast when raised.Any suggestions would be appreciated

The standard tang has three holes. The main shackle that carries the shrouds and forestay use the lower hole on the tang. These hang from a 5/16" shackle. The 1/4" shackle for the trapeze wires hangs from the top hole. The "hoop" or bell of the shackle passes through the larger/center hole.

Be sure that the jib halyard wire is routed cleanly. Shouldn't be another cause there.

After hoisting the main, I hook the halyard at the top... then bring the halyard out, aft and around the starboard shroud. I then loop the line under the downhaul cleat and only then do I tie it off on the starboard mast cleat. Pull enough tension to keep the kinks out. That will keep it well clear of the jib while tacking.

Thanks for the reply.Only thing I,m not sure about is the shackle you say to put through the middle hole.Is there not only two shackles?

There are just two shackles.

One 5/16" Bell for the forestay and shrouds. Hangs from the lower hole.

One 1/4" Bell for the trapeze wires. The shackle pin passes through the upper hole and the body (bell or hoop) of the shackle passes through the large / Center hole. Hang one set on each side of the tang.
