My explanation of the name got deleted on Hobiecat.com so I will not disclose here. It is based on activities I enjoy while under sail. It can only be accomplished in the ocean, preferably offshore. Most exhilarating while flying a hull, although sometimes not as satisfying.
my old NACRA 5.8 = WET SPOT
NACRA 5.5 uni = TWO HOT
NACRA 5.7 = wind over water (with the word
wind
looking windblown, and the word water looking like its underwater.
In contrast, my monohull is called
One with the Wind
. Once I win a few races on it I'll chaneg it to
Won with the Wind
.
The Acat is
Fat Bottom Girl
, the hulls are fatter under the water line. Sung to the Queen song...
The CL14 is
Grace
came with that name, its approporiate, dont want to change it.
The IC was called
Smoking Crack
as the hull was cured with a wood stove, prior to me inheriting the hull. I took the power tools to it and made it a DC, so its
Smoking Crack, Chainsaw Massacre.

I didn't name her so I can't take credit for any of this, but my prindle 18-2 is named
ORKAN
. On the bow she displays the attached signal flag.
Of course I had to look up the meaning for both... ORKAN is Norwegian for Hurricane. The flag means
You are standing into danger
. I'm not norwegian, and I don't own a set of signal flags, but I still like the name and flag on the cat.
Every time I take her out in a good wind, the scorpions start playing through my head...
- It's early morning, the sun comes out
- Last night was shaking, and pretty loud
- My cat is purring, and scratches my skin
- ...
- Here I am! bah dum bum bada, Rock you like a hurricane!
I'm thinking of either
The Other Woman
or
Firebolt
accompanied by a nice truefire paint job
or
If I ever could get black sails with a skull and cross bones I might paint my hulls black and call her
The Black Pearl
I all ready bought a little Flag with a skull and crossbones that says
The beating with continue until morale improves
The A-Cat is
slippery when wet
The Tornado was renamed DasBoot when wet@!##$ was complained about just prior to launch day in 1988. What can I say, I was young and dumb when I chose the name. Glad others were not as young and dumb and the name was never painted.
Re-naming a boat is BAD MOJO (bad, bad bad mojo)
If done right, you can appease Poseidon or your favorite water deitie. Do a search on boat naming/renaming ceremonies and you will find plenty of info.

Most of them have an alcohol component. A large alcohol component.

My Favorite ...
Years ago there was a VERY experienced skipper competing in the
Down the Bay Race
... who tried to pass under the western approach causeway of the Chesapeake Bay Bridge ... he miss judged the clearence .... there was a loud
BONK
as he hit all four the roadway support beams .... that night a individual/group using red & black permenant markers named his boat ....
CENTER SPAN
.
Sail Flat, Sail Fast

The boat itself isn't the special treat... It's actually named for a certain
thing
my wife and I do at
special times
which is done at fast speeds and can get quite wet. And so I named the boat after that! <img src=

The graphics I designed and a local sign shop did them in vinyl and put them on the hulls.

bit of a late post contribution to this thread but was waiting for a good pic to show the boat under sail
when bought, here on a small lake in mountain japan, my boat was just known as
the nacra
26 years old, but little used, it looked like it would clean up well, but nothing could be done to improve the uv cracked factory stickers
with a long winter it was easy enough to decided to carefully copy, enlarge and hand paint the makers name and boat type direct to the hull
about then the white tiger's head, that the sailing anarchists came up for the flying tiger, caught my eye and because it was eye catching and could just be a few black blobs of paint on a white hull i decided to paint that on too
with a
face
for the boat it now needed a name to match and with the addition of some sunglasses on the tiger head we decided on
cool cat
. easy to read, understand and pronounce in a non-english speaking country
mucking around on the computer things seemed to look best if they were as big as possible, so it was decided to put big tigers heads on the bow, move the factory stuff to the stern and the fill up in between with the name
masking and painting strait lines is too much work so fonts were searched until
chiller
was found on ms word
still looking for good ideas from other boats we flogged the red lettering on the mast from the f18 capricorn
very happy with the result, makes the 4 year old hobie 16 on the same beach look old fashioned:o)
